In order to retrieve the diagnostic trouble code from the Check Engine Light in a Honda Civic, you must first find the jumper plug for the light, which can usually be found in the passenger kick panel and is typically light blue or gray. Once you've located the plug, you need to connect the two wires together by using a short piece of wire or a paperclip. After connecting the wires, turn on the ignition and count the number of flashes from the CEL. These flashes indicate the code that will help you identify the issue. Once you've noted the trouble code and fixed the underlying problem, you'll need to clear the codes and reset the CEL. Locate the underhood fuse box and refer to the owner's manual to find the ECU Memory/Backup fuse. Remove the fuse and wait approximately 5 minutes before replacing it. This action will erase the codes and turn off the Check Engine Light.

Pressing the reset button will clear the "Maint Req'd" indicator, but not the Check Engine light, which is represented by an engine symbol. These lights serve different purposes - the Maint Req'd light alerts you when routine maintenance, like an oil change, is due, while the Check Engine light signals a potential issue with the vehicle that requires attention from a Honda dealer and may result in expenses.
