Cadillac VIN Check: What is a Cadillac VIN?

Henry Ford founded Cadillac in 1902, and was kicked out of his own company for mismanagement. General Motors bought the company in 1909, positioning it as their most luxurious model line. They backed their claim of being the “Standard of the World” with several firsts, including the first synchromesh transmission and the first dual plane V8. After WWII, Harley Earl's radical designs made Cadillac America's most desirable luxury brand. The brand floundered in the 80s and 90s, before finding its footing with the massively successful Escalade SUV and a shift from land yachts to sporty luxury cars. Today, the brand is best known for its luxury SUVs and high performance “V” sports sedans.

Buying any car is a big decision, especially if it's a luxury car. Take the stress out of your next purchase by using the VIN decoder Cadillac drivers turn to for accurate information: EpicVIN. Our Cadillac VIN lookup decodes each character, telling you when and where the vehicle was built, as well as its standard equipment.

For over four decades, all vehicles in the U.S. have been issued a 17 digit VIN (Vehicle Identification Number.) The VIN is unique to each vehicle, so it's used as an ID on official documents. However, it's more than a serial number. Most of the VIN number is used to identify manufacturing details. Our Cadillac VIN number lookup tells you what these characters mean, so you can verify the vehicle you're looking at is authentic.

Where to Search for the VIN?

How do you get this code to run a DMV VIN check? Here are some places you can find this number on a Cadillac:

  • Look through the windshield at the dashboard. You should see a small plate next to the driver's door. The number on this plate is the VIN. If you're looking at a newer model, the lower part of the windshield is usually blacked out. Look for a small, clear rectangle in this area. You can see the VIN plate through this slot.
  • Open the driver's door. Depending on the year, there will be a sticker on the side of the B pillar between the doors, or just below the door latch. The VIN is printed in bold text on the middle left side of this sticker.
  • Open the glove box and look for a “Service Parts Identification” sticker. The VIN is on the top left of this sticker.
  • Look at the left side of the engine block. The VIN is etched into the block, either below the head or above the oil pan.
  • The VIN is often etched into the windows at the dealer, so these parts can be tracked if they're stolen. However, if a salvage part was used for accident repairs, it won't have the correct VIN for the vehicle.
  • Check the title, insurance cards, and registration. These documents use the VIN to identify the vehicle.

Don't have the VIN? Our license plate lookup finds the VIN of the car currently registered to the plate. From there, our search engine can decode this number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Locations vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. However, there are three places you can find the code on most vehicles:

- Look through the windshield at the dashboard. On the driver’s side, you should see a small metal plate with the number stamped into it.
- Open the driver’s door. Look at the front and side of the door pillar for an I.D. sticker. It usually has the manufacturer’s logo on it. The code should be on this sticker.
- Open the hood. You may see a sticker on the firewall or near the passenger’s side strut tower. Some cars have the number engraved in one of these areas.

Since this number is used to identify the vehicle on official documents, you can also find it on the title, the window sticker, and on insurance policies.

We also decode numbers for RVs, heavy-duty trucks and motorcycles. If you need to decode an RV number, make sure it’s the one issued by the chassis manufacturer, not the RV outfitter.

No. Canadian and Mexican cars usually use the same format. Other countries use their own formats.

It’s up to the manufacturer to determine what they want to include for some parts of the number. For example, some companies don’t include information about transmissions or trim levels.

Usually, no. A few manufacturers stamp the code into the engine. If the VINs on the engine and car match, then it’s the original engine. On most vehicles, there isn’t anything that ties an engine to a specific vehicle. At most, looking up the vehicle on our website will tell you if a different type of engine was installed. For example, if someone swaps a V8 into a Ford Mustang, our site will tell you it originally came with a V6.
