2006 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe In 1951 a group of Harley Earl's "Special Projects" crew began work on a GM sports car. Bob McLean designed a general layout for the car which was originally code named, "Opel." William Durant, the founder of GM, said a wallpaper pattern he saw in a Paris hotel in 1928 inspired the bow tie logo. Supposedly, he ripped off a small piece of it and brought it back to Detroit. Myron Scott, at the time Chevrolet's Chief photographer, is credited with coming up with the Corvette name, drawing from the small, fast warships of the "Corvette" class.Fast forward to 2006 and this C6 version puts out 400hp and has the first exposed headlights since 1962. This coupe from Bowling Green presents in very good condition with a mere 40,387 title verified original miles. This Corvette drives smoothly with a really nice ride quality and makes it seem as though you are floating over the bumps and bruises in the road. ExteriorMonterey Red bathes the fiberglass on this beautiful factory C6 and clean integrated plastic covered headlights are on to give the car a more menacing and aero look. A Corvette cove is on each front quarter, right out of 1954, while a beautifully sculpted hood is on and flips forward to reveal the engine bay. For contrast, the smoked removable targa top allows light in and defines the B-pillar. Beautiful 18 and 19-inch polished 5 spoke wheels with low profile rubber with a late 2020 date code. The door handle is cut into the body and allows air to pass over on its way to the bulging shoulder line that becomes the rear deck behind the curved rear window. On the wide tail of the car we find the iconic round taillights and a cluster of quad exhaust tips protruding as center exit components. Its profile reveals a heavy nose that pushes forward and from the A-pillar back, the attitude shifts to a rearward cant, all in an effort to parry the wind. There are no major imperfections to note on the exterior indicating this car has likely never been used as a daily driver. InteriorThe long doors are beautifully constructed with flowing lines and seamless integration of black plastic and a central panel, along with a Bose speaker that contours to the shape of the door panel. High back and well padded black leather bucket seats await occupants with perforated inserts. We note some compression on the driver's side, but wear is minimal. The leather wrapped sport steering wheel invites you to take hold and peer into the gauge cluster which consists of black faced analog displays with bright red needles. In the center of the dash a screen displays, among other things, the functions of AM/FM/CD radio. Below is a temp controller with digital display as well as the heated seat controls. The center console houses the leather booted shifter and the indicator panel that runs under it in a unique configuration. Low pile black carpet covers the floor nicely and is protected by carpeted Corvette mats that have taken the brunt of usage. The cargo area is covered with a clean, fitted, carpeted mat and a formed plastic storage bin, also in great shape. DrivetrainThe engine bay houses the spotless 6.0 liter V8, fuel injected and rated at 400 horsepower. Beautiful body colored engine covers with gold lettering veer from the stock colors of these plastic panels and looks fantastic, rendering the engine bay instantly show worthy. Meanwhile, a 6L80E 6-speed automatic transmission backs up the engine and sends power to the rear wheels with 2.56 gears. Naturally, power disc brakes are employed to tame this sports car from any speed. UndercarriageRemarkably clean underneath with zero surface rust and just a touch of residual oil on the pan. The belly pans are spotless and wheel components are too. Meanwhile, the dual exhaust travels down the center tunnel and meets stainless steel Borla S-type mufflers which lead into chrome tips. Suspension consists of the Corvette's trademark A-arm, composite monoleaf springs, tube shock absorbers, and anti roll bar configuration on both front and rear. Drive-AbilityA low mileage C6 fulfills its expectations. This car has great acceleration, handles like it's on rails, and stops on a dime. Visibility is excellent and the cabin is a cozy, comfortable place to be and a simple drive with the automatic, or a bit more engaging with the paddle shifters. All the functions were working as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase. If the Corvette can be basic, and that's up for discussion, this one presents as a very clean, very straight, mostly original example with no over the top mods. You could fly under the radar with the dark red paint and by fly, we mean minding speed limits, of course.
