I spec'd a Subaru Outback on cars.com and then contacted 4 dealers requesting quotes. Subaru of Corvallis was first to respond and provided exactly what I asked for - a quote. The quote was pretty darn close to my local dealership, and I ended up going with the local dealership just because I plan to go there for service and it was just less driving to pick up the car. But I really appreciated Subaru of Corvallis responding with exactly what I requested, rather than asking what I was looking for or asking me to come in for a test drive like a couple of the other dealerships did.

Worked with Jason Burcina and Steve Younger. They offered competitive pricing and a hassle-free buying experience without adding a bunch of up-sell. Car was cleaned and thoroughly prepped. Jason took the time to explain all the features I was interested in, while also being aware that I was interested in getting in and out the door quickly.

2002 Subaru Outback H6 purchased new in October of 2001 from John & Phils in Corvallis, OR. It's been 9 years since we bought the car, and it had a rough first 5 years or so.Brakes - Pulsing was very bad and wheels went out of balance all the time causing a constant vibration at high speeds (still to this day and 4 sets of tires later). Neither the shop nor Subaru offered any assistance to fix. Lots of brake squeak and squeal. Took several shop visits for brake work to fix. Service receptionist accused my wife of being "a light braker"...so I guess it was our fault for not braking properly. You'd laugh if you ever rode with my wife. ;-)I'm currently running high end rally style rotors and ceramic pads on the front. Pulsing is gone, but vibration from the very light front end components is noticeable, still.Driver side mirror - Wind noise is extreme. I noticed this was printed up as an issue in the TSB's put out by Subaru online...but J&P never informed me about it while the car was still under warranty...so it still howls to this day. They just said they couldn't fix it.AC - TSB's indicated a problem with the AC. We had issues with the AC cutting out all summer in 2003. This was fixed after only two visits. Yeah!Sheet metal - Car is very flimsy construction. I drove through the plowed snow in the mountains and sheet metal was deformed underneath and forced up against the exhaust causing a loud vibration when backing up. Took two visits for them to find and fix.Windows - Power window would quit intermittenly. I explained that I heard the sound of electrical shorting, as if a circuit breaker was resetting, just before the windows started working again. They wouldn't trouble shoot it based on that info. I found the solution in the online service manual (in the Troubleshooting section, no less), which is actually quite good. Took two visits before they observed the windows not working. I assumed the thermal circuit breaker was the culprit. It was located under the steering column and lube from the steering area would drip through it after the lube got hot (like in the summer). Two more visits and we decided to buy the $35 thermal circuit breaker ourselves and replace. Took about an hour with schematics and the online Subaru Tech manual. Leaky engine gaskets - Either the valve cover or some other seal started leaking after the first few years we had the car. Oil gets on exhaust and smells, especially when idling (and climate controls on "outside air"). An independent shop told us this is common with this engine and the only fix is to replace these gaskets, which is pricey and only a temporary fix. The gasket takes a permanent set, gets crushed or creeps, so tightening it just causes it to herniate further rather than stopping the leak.Service personnel were rude - Subaru of America and J&P both acted as if our business didn't matter. We put a sign in the back three windows: "For awful service and a lemon, we recommend John and Phils" and drove around town like that for six months. I got a call at my work phone one day from a salesman wanting to "make it right". The car was well out of the overpriced extended warranty, and we told them we wanted something else.He offered to give us below Kelly Blue Book for the car in trade, and to put us into another overpriced newer Outback and roll it all into one loan for ~$35-40k. My wife told him that was sufficient to convince her to buy a Volvo.

Absolutely swindlers. Their technician team is very lame and incompetent and my experience with them has proved it to me that all they know to do is just a random trial and failure. Their information desk people are rude and do not know how to respect the poor guy they are fleecing him off (at least the lady I dealt with is like this). Their pricing is pathetically ridiculous. They priced a part of my car $123 while I found it online for $2.97!! I emphasize again, they are just nasty moochers and if you do not want to be billed $280 for just a diagnosing that your door lock is not working, do not go there. It is really funny that sometimes you go to a business to SPEND your money and the minimum you expect is being respected and behaved properly but you encounter with some ignorant snotty personnel who think you OWE them or something!!!!I would not care about their attitude if their price was even close to fair and they were close to skillful. They horribly overestimate the time their technician needs to work on your car (or probably they know how their workmen figure out the problems by checking and trying every thing) and you have to pay $85 for each hour he is roaming around your car!To be concise: Emptying your bank account + Grounding your car for days and days + Rudeness = John and Phils (corvallis)

One of the most annoying problems with all dealers is that they want to hound you forever to buy something after you have purchased a vehicle from them. John & Phil's embraces this philosophy to the limit by actually asking you to sign an agreement that they can call you anytime as often as they like. Think about it. My advice is to print in BOLD letters on that form "DO NOT CONTACT ME BY WAY OF PHONE AT ANY TIME. IF YOU CALL ME FOR ANY REASON OTHER THAN A GENUINE EMERGENCY, YOU WILL BE PROSECUTED TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW FOR INVASION OF PRIVACY." They want to interrupt your day so they can peddle more merchandise. They could (and do) send you info/solicitations via mail, which is more than adequate. However, even when you ask them not to, they call to visit or tell you that your 3,000 mile service or 10,000 mile service is due. How they can possible know how many miles you have on your car? This dealer (and to be fair, probably most others) seems not to understand that it is one thing to offer a service, but an invasion of privacy to force their "beneficence" upon you.Because of this, I cannot recommend this Dealer. However, since they probably all do it, the best you can do is to obtain from them a written statement that they will NOT telephone you (unless, of course, you really like annoying, useless solicitations. One last comment. This dealer likes to start very high on their prices. Even their advertised sale prices. Should you decide to buy from this dealer, you will need to do your research and make a reasonable offer to hope to arrive at a fair price.Unfortunately, had this dealer behaved better after the sale, they would have gotten a recommendation, but as they did not value my wishes regarding privacy, they haven't earned a recommendation.

We took our 2005 Subaru Outback to John and Phils in Nov 06 to have the 6-disc CD player fixed under warranty- it was randomly skipping to other tracks and CDs during play. Three months and 7 appointments later and we are still dealing with problems stemming from the original appointment. We have had to deal with everything from scratches on the face plate to re-wiring issues in the climate control to our personal CDs removed (and sent to Subaru) with the CD player (when they told us they were only replacing the face plate). Every time (6 in total!) we got the car back the mechanics had ruined something else. The service people were not much better. Although they tried to remain friendly they placed blame on us ("you didn't leave a CD in the changer so we couldn't replicate the problem") and suggested that we live with the problems on a 2-yr old car! We will never return to John and Phils - it is worth the extra mileage to go to Albany - and we have been telling anyone who listens not to go there as well. The service department is very incompetent and nasty.
