1990 Porsche Carrera 2 When Porsche first put the 964 generation 911 on sale in 1989, it caused a stir among Porsche purists as it was the first major overhaul of the 911 shape in the model's 25 year production run. With its integrated plastic bumpers, re-designed rear suspension and more supple cabin, the 964 spent many years as the orphaned 911 generation, with enthusiasts opting for the newer 993, or older G-Body cars. But in recent years, enthusiasts have come to realize that the 964 is potentially the best of the 911 range and represents the ideal middle-point between classic driving dynamics and modern comfort, technology and reliability. The 964 was launched into a world wide recession and over the model's 5 years of production, just over 62,000 units were produced- with a large number of those fitted with either all-wheel-drive or a convertible top.
