When the E46 M3 went on sale in late 2000, it redefined the idea of a performance coupe- especially in the United States. If you know BMW history, you know the story about the US market E36 M3 and how it was significantly down on power and technology when compared to the European variants. Even still, buyers flocked to BMW dealerships to acquire the E36 M3 and showed the executives that there was a serious appetite in the United States for a high performance coupe. In light of this, when the new E46 generation went on sale, it was essentially the same car that was offered around the world.
