HDK stands for High Downforce Kit and was a special option available to McLaren F1 owners after McLaren won the 24 Hours of LeMans in 1995 with the F1 GTR. The HDK allowed F1 road car owners to have some of the same aero components and bodywork from the GTR fitted to their car, thus transforming the look and feel from a tame road car to a race-winning weapon for the road. Fast forward over 25 years later, Lanzante, the very same team that ran that LeMans winning F1 for McLaren, has created the P1 HDK. The P1 HDK program follows in the same footsteps as the F1 HDK, with the car starting life as a P1 road car and having all of the GTR aero and bodywork custom fitted to it. The HDK for the F1 in 1995 was pretty tame compared to what you see on the P1 HDK and that is because of over two decades of advancement in the world of motorsport and pushing the limits. Therefore, what was only a couple components fitted to the F1 back in the day has advanced to every single panel on the P1 being changed. In fact the only panel left untouched is the roof. The build process is handled with almost aerospace like precision at Lanzante's workshop and headquarters in Petersfield, England. In keeping with the story and homage of the F1 HDK, only 9 P1 HDKs will ever be built, which is how many F1's have been fitted with the HDK. This particular car is build number 5 and is built using P1 chassis 063, formerly owned by well-known McLaren F1 GTR racing driver and champion Ray Bellm. The car started life as standard Volcano Red with Black interior and since the build was being done during McLaren's big 60th Anniversary celebration, it was decided that it would have a very "McLaren" feeling spec. The car is finished in Satin Supernova Silver, silver being a color almost as important as orange in McLaren's history as it was used on the launch car for the McLaren F1 and Supernova silver being used on the P1 that broke the Nurburgring record. The famous McLaren Orange however makes a bold and prominent appearance on the interior, with a very unique two tone color split of black Alcantara and McLaren orange leather. The final touch to this celebratory spec is the 60th anniversary logo on both sides of the exposed carbon tub when you open the doors. It should also be noted that this is the only P1 HDK with satin paint, which contrasts perfectly with the gloss exposed carbon fiber found extensively throughout the exterior of the car. And finally, the piece de resistance, the 4.0L "LM spec" engine. Originally only 6 of these engines existed, found only in the back of the P1 LM. This engine has now been made available by Lanzante on their special builds. Being an owner of 1 of the 375 P1's is a pretty exclusive group to belong to, but being 1 of 9 is on another level.
