The M440i is powered by a silky-smooth turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that gains an assist from a 48-volt hybrid system to make 382-hp. The 4-series provides a sporty driving experience, courtesy of a retuned suspension, a more-aggressive steering calibration, a wider rear track, and a lower center of gravity than the 3-series sedan. The 4-Series boasts commendable handling and terrific acceleration. The M440i are more than just quicker, though with 382 hp from a 3.0-liter turbo-6, they rip to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds. They see a notable improvement in response thanks to adaptive dampers, a limited-slip differential, and variable sport steering. They also stop better thanks to upsized brakes. These coupes, convertibles, and sedans serve up an attractive and well-wrought interior. The 430i has plenty of thrust to scoot around, and the six-cylinder of the M440i is truly special. Only a few luxury brands offer a compact coupe and convertible like the 4 Series does, with the Audi A5 being the most competitive example. The base 430i versions provide enough power and performance for most, but if you want more, the M440i's robust engine and athletic handling are impressive. It delivers an engaging driving experience without sacrificing comfort, and it provides plenty of luxury and tech. We tested a rear-wheel-drive M440i convertible. It packs a lot of punch, and in our testing it ripped from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, a full second quicker than a similarly equipped 430i coupe we also tested. Acceleration is punchy at highway speeds, too. BMW makes some of the best front seats in the business. They are comfortable and feature multiple adjustments, including side bolster angle and thigh extension, that allow you to find an ideal sitting position. The M440i's standard adaptive suspension provides a surprisingly supple ride. Wind and tire noise is kept to a minimum too. Wireless smartphone connectivity through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is now standard and worked flawlessly in our test car. The smooth inline-six of the M440i is a great motor.
