The shifter light on a 2016 Jeep Cherokee signals that the car's computer has detected an issue with the shifter's operation. This problem has been a recurring concern for many owners of 2016 Cherokees, leading to complaints to the NHTSA. Possible causes of the problem include faults in the shifter's wiring harness or assembly, necessitating replacement in most cases. In some instances, a missing software update or blown fuses could also trigger the shifter warning. There is a prevalent belief among owners that the shifter part was not designed properly, with failures typically occurring before reaching 20,000 miles. The cost of replacing the shifter, excluding warranty coverage, can range from $200 to $250 for parts and labor.

For how far can you keep driving the car when the message "service shifter" appears?

May I continue to operate the vehicle?

The "Service Shifter" light means that the gear shifter needs attention. If this light is on, it's best to bring the vehicle to a dealership for service.

My issue typically occurs following left turns. It doesn't happen every time. By pressing both the up and down arrows on the steering wheel simultaneously, the display reverts to normal. I've had it checked out twice but they couldn't find any solutions or specific codes. I've learned to just accept it and live with the problem.

The shifter lights won't stop turning on, not sure why. Anybody have any thoughts on what's going on?

My warning light comes on when I shift my car into neutral, and it remains on on the dashboard along with all the lights on the shifter. To fix it, I simply put the car back in Park, turn it off, and then restart. This resolves the issue until it happens again, but so far I haven't had any problems.

So, my warning lights were activated from 2016 until December of 2021 when I brought my Jeep in for a safety recall that I had missed in 2017. After the recall update, I encountered a banner obstructing my Heads-Up Display, which shows my speedometer. In my opinion, the Jeep will function as long as you can tolerate the Jeep interfering with your vehicle's display, pushing you to replace something that they should have repaired. Unless the next recall reprograms your vehicle to prevent it from starting when the warning lights appear.

The shifter light in my Jeep has turned on three times already. It was supposedly fixed twice, but now it's illuminated again. I have informed Jeep and reached out to various places, but there hasn't been a recall yet. It's quite frustrating, even though my car still runs the same and I continue driving it, the situation is irritating.

In 2017, my car started shutting off every time I turned left. I have to park, switch it off, and then turn it back on, but it shuts off again the next time I turn left. This issue is frustrating and concerning me that it may not start again.

This is the third time I've had to get my car repaired. The dealership assured me that it wouldn't happen again once they fixed it, but here we are for the third time. Why isn't it staying fixed?

My light has been turning on for a while now. The dealership doesn't find any issue. I usually just switch off the car, wait a few minutes, then turn it back on, and the lights and warning go away.

Could this be the reason why it won't start? The indicator light turned on a week ago, and now the car won't start, with the ABS and parking brake lights flashing.
