When starting up a Ford F-150, the error code 1-6 might show up if there are issues with the dashboard system. Ford's security feature known as PATS, or the "Passive Anti-Theft System," prevents unauthorized use of the vehicle by using a special chip in the key to either activate or disable the engine. In the F-150, there is a component in the steering column that interacts with the key fob's chip to allow the vehicle to start. If an unrecognized key is used, the system will trigger an error message and prevent the truck from starting as a security measure. Additionally, the system will notify the driver in case there are any issues with the dashboard system. The "1-6" error code specifically indicates a problem with all the gauges, which is usually caused by a breakdown in communication between the dashboard and the PCM. It is recommended to have both the dashboard system and the PCM diagnosed to address this issue.
