To start changing the headlight bulb in a 2017 Ford Explorer, first, open the hood to reach the bulb. Use a Torx T20 star bit screwdriver to unscrew the single screw on the access panel by turning it in a clockwise direction. Next, twist the dust cap 1/4 turn in a clockwise direction and remove it. Release the tab on the black plastic power connector and pull the plug off the base of the low beam bulb. Remove the old bulb and insert a new one in its place. The recommended headlight bulbs are either 9005 or H11, with prices ranging from $15 to $35 depending on the brand and quality.

In 2017 models, the LED lightbulb in the headlight unit cannot be swapped out independently; the whole unit must be replaced, which can cost around $1500 through Ford. While there is a YouTube video demonstrating a method to open the headlight unit with a heat gun, switch out the LED, and seal it back up, the process is intricate and quite time-consuming for the average individual.
