Diesel models of the Mazda CX5 have faced a well-known issue of head gasket failure at 40,000 miles and below in Taiwan and Thailand. These diesel CX5 vehicles are no longer offered in the US, and due to numerous complaints from owners in Southeast Asia, they have ceased being marketed in Taiwan as well. This problem arises suddenly, typically indicated by white smoke from the engine, severe overheating, coolant loss, leaks, and can lead to complete engine breakdown. A combination of a manufacturing flaw and the hot, humid climates of Taiwan and Thailand are believed to be the culprits behind this issue. After a demonstration outside Mazda's corporate offices in Taiwan, the company has agreed to replace engines and extend warranties in most cases.
