The Toyota Tacoma TSS off-road package is part of the Toyota Safety Sense collection, which incorporates many popular modern safety features into your truck. These features, such as automatic braking, lane-keeping assistance, and radar cruise control, were typically only available on higher-end vehicles, but Toyota is now making them available across the entire lineup. In addition to these safety features, the TSS off-road package offers various exterior trim options that can give your truck a more distinctive and aggressive look. These options include 17-inch black rims, black step bars, black exhaust tips, and black badges on the tailgate, all of which can help your truck stand out in a crowd.

TSS, short for Toyota Safety Sense, is a safety package that comes standard. The TSS Off Road SE Black Package is an additional $3,999 (MSRP) option for Tacoma S trucks, which enhances the appearance of the base model. This package includes 17-inch black wheels, black step bars, a black exhaust tip, black lettering on the tailgate, and a TSS Off Road sticker on the rear side panels. It can be confusing as both packages are referred to as "TSS.

In this situation, TSS refers to the Toyota Sports Series, which should not be confused with Toyota Safety Sense.

TSS represents two different things. The first is Toyota Safety Sense, a bundle of safety features like lane departure warnings and front collision monitoring. However, the TSS trim model refers to an aesthetic package available for the standard Tacoma. I own a 2023 TSS off-road version. While I don't typically splurge on cosmetic enhancements, I was fortunate to find one with additional features. I was able to negotiate adding another feature and still purchase it at the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP), which was a discount of around $3,000 off the sticker price, making it only slightly more expensive than a base 4x4 model. My TSS off-road variant came equipped with 17-inch bronze powder-coated wheels from the TRD Pro lineup, off-road tires, sleek black side rails, an upgraded sound system, and a catalytic converter guard skid plate. This last addition was important as it's common in my area for parked trucks to have their catalytic converters stolen, especially Toyotas due to their higher platinum content. The TSS trim label specifically stands for Toyota Sport Series. While I initially craved the TRD Pro model, I do not engage in a lot of intense off-roading and couldn't justify the extra cost. For my needs at the farm, having 4x4 capability to avoid getting stuck is sufficient. However, if someone plans on extensive off-road adventures, investing in the TRD suspension and locking differential upgrades might be a wiser choice.
