If the alternator in a 2012 Chevy Silverado stops working, the warning light on the dashboard will illuminate while you are driving. Soon after, all the electrical components will begin to lose power, causing the vehicle to eventually stop. If the engine starts but quickly shuts off, it is likely that the alternator is not properly charging the battery. A worn-out alternator bearing could create a grinding sound that changes with the engine's speed. You may still be able to drive the vehicle to a repair shop with a faulty alternator, but if it has completely failed, the car will need to be towed.

If your alternator breaks down, the battery warning light on your dashboard will come on while you're driving. Soon after, all your electrical parts will start acting up, your car will stop moving, and the power steering won’t work. If the alternator bearing goes bad, it might cause a grinding noise that changes with the engine speed. You can still drive to a mechanic if the alternator is faulty, but if it dies completely, you'll need a tow.
