In the 2006 Ford Explorer, the transmission fluid capacity is 11 quarts. To change the transmission fluid, start by ensuring that the car is level on the ground and then opening the hood. Locate the transmission fluid reservoir, which is typically located on or near the transmission itself, and find the dipstick. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it, and then pull it out again. Take note of the fluid level indicated and the amount needed to fill the reservoir. Use a funnel to slowly add fluid until the reservoir is full or at the appropriate level. It's okay to be slightly below full, but avoid overfilling. Secure the reservoir and you're good to go.

To begin, the 2006 Explorer lacks a transmission dipstick. Filling and draining the transmission is achieved through a hole located at the bottom. To check the fluid level, warm up the engine, engage the parking brake, and shift the vehicle into Neutral. Locate the drain/fill screw underneath, and with a catch pan ready, carefully unscrew it. Some fluid may drip out, but it shouldn't overflow unless it's been overfilled. Note that if the engine is off or the vehicle is in Park, the fluid won't circulate, and it will only drain when the screw is loosened. After removing the screw, use a pump with a hose to add more fluid. Keep adding until the fluid starts flowing back out of the hole. Wait about a minute after removing the hose to allow any excess to drain, then replace the screw. When incorporating a stop leak/stop slip additive, make sure to remove the screw when the engine is off. Measure the amount of fluid being drained and replace the screw once you've removed what you'll replace with the additive. Start the engine, shift into Neutral, and add the additive following the same procedure as before. Remember to apply the parking brake to prevent the vehicle from moving. Inside the transmission pan, there is a tube about 3-4 inches tall, with the top indicating the full level of fluid. Any surplus will drain out when the screw is removed, but none will escape when the fluid is low. This feature prevents overfilling, which can cause seal blowouts and transmission damage.
