The amount of transmission fluid your 2016 Ford Explorer needs depends on the engine you have. If you have the 3.5 L V6, it takes about 11.6 quarts, but for the 2.3 L Ecoboost, it's 9 quarts. It is recommended to use Motorcraft Mercon LV Automatic Transmission Fluid for these engines, or an equivalent if you prefer a different brand. The maintenance schedule advises changing the transmission fluid every 150,000 miles. Although the fluid can be pricey, you won't need to replace it frequently like engine oil.
