The 5A fault code you might see on a BMW X5 concerning the ABS system indicates a "Brief Power Interruption." It's an unusual issue to encounter with your anti-lock brake system, but it's quite common in X5s. Typically, a faulty wheel sensor or a failing ABS control module could trigger this error. Although the error usually points to the ABS module, it's more cost-effective to first check and potentially replace the wheel sensor. If you're interested in the specific issue within the ABS control module, a wire welded with steel may come off the PCB bond pad inside. If you're skilled with a soldering iron and determine it's the module causing the problem, you could save around $500 by fixing it yourself.

In 2001, my BMW 330xi had its battery disconnected for about a week and a half while I was working on it. When I reconnected the battery, I ended up with the infamous trio of indicator lights on my dashboard. Both of my diagnostic tools showed a DSC 5A code. Although I couldn't find much concrete information on the 5A code, I read that it could be related to the steering angle sensor. To troubleshoot, I turned the ignition on and turned the steering wheel all the way to the left, then all the way to the right, repeating this process three times. Surprisingly, the lights disappeared after the first cycle from left to right. I plan to test it out on the road for a while before I confirm that the issue is resolved, but things are looking promising for now.
