In a Ford vehicle, the C8 axle code signifies a gear ratio of 2.73 in the differential. This equates to the wheels rotating once for every 2.7 rotations of the drive shaft. If you need to change the gears, whether for repairs or upgrading the ratio, you must first drain the differential. Crawl under the rear of the car, position a drain pan beneath the differential, and unscrew the drain plug. Next, remove the fill plug located above the drain plug. Note that the differential fluid is viscous and may take some time to completely empty. Once the flow reduces to a trickle, proceed to remove the bolts at the rear of the differential and detach the cover.
