The camshaft position sensor in the 2006 Chevy Impala with a 3.5-liter V6 engine is located beneath the power steering pump on the right side of the engine. Positioned in the cylinder head sealing line on the side that has the belt, the sensor is either at or just below the valve cover. Its main role is to track where the camshaft is in relation to the crankshaft. This information is crucial for determining the correct amount of fuel needed for combustion and power. The data collected by the sensor is then sent to the powertrain control module, which uses it to control the fuel injector and ignition system. Warning signs that may indicate a faulty sensor include the engine light coming on, difficulty starting the vehicle or failure to launch, as well as the car jerking or surging forward during acceleration.
