The EVAP canister, also called the purge valve, in the 2016 Ford Explorer is positioned on the left side of the driver firewall next to the brake booster and master cylinder. Filled with activated charcoal, the EVAP canister traps emissions from your car to benefit the environment and your health while riding in it. A faulty canister can cause a fuel smell or a sulfur-like odor inside the car, which is harmful to inhale and can result in failing an emissions test and receiving a ticket. If you detect such odors or receive an error code, it is crucial to have the car checked at an auto shop.
