The 2009 Honda Civic requires 4.7 quarts of premium-grade 5w-20 oil during an oil change. Before starting the process, ensure the car has been turned off and parked for a couple of hours to let the oil cool down. This prevents the risk of burning yourself. Identify the oil pan in the engine and find the drain plug underneath. Place a bucket beneath the plug and remove it to allow the oil to drain into the pan. Let it drain completely, which could take up to an hour. Once the dripping stops, reattach the drain plug and find the intake port on the top of the oil pan. Fill the oil pan using a funnel until it reaches the full mark, but avoid overfilling to prevent leaks and oil burn off. It's okay to be a little under the full mark. Once filled, close the port, clean up any spilled oil, and you're done.

In the 2009 Honda Civic manual, it states that the Si Model should use 5W-30 oil under normal conditions, and switch to 10W-30 if the temperature never drops below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. For all other Civic models in 2009, they should use 5W-20 oil. The recommended oil volume for all models is 4.6 quarts.
