The official oil for the 2009 Nissan Rogue is any oil brand that carries an API certification mark and has a viscosity rating of 5W-30 SAE. The SUV's engine requires 4.8 quarts (4.6 liters) of oil, according to the manufacturer. It is recommended to change the oil every 3500 to 5000 miles or every six months. You have the option to use either conventional or synthetic oil, but do not mix them. While conventional oil is cheaper than full synthetic, you may need more frequent servicing with conventional oil because it breaks down faster and may not provide the same level of lubrication for the engine components over time.

My 2009 Rogue has 210,545 miles on it and it still runs quietly and smoothly. I have always used Mobile 1 10W-40 conventional oil. Unlike my sister who uses synthetic oil in her car. She has had to replace her valve cover twice because of leaky spark plug tube seals. While she may go double the miles before an oil change, those extra miles cause her engine to run hotter, leading to the seals drying out. Nissan does not require synthetic oil, so my advice comes from an older perspective when oil changes were done every 3 months or 3,000 miles. This practice was sufficient for your father and grandfather, so it should be good enough for you. Using synthetic oils can make you less attentive to regular maintenance.
