General Motors advises using an engine oil that meets dexos 1 specifications and is SAE 5W-30 for most engines, except for the 1.8-liter hybrid, which uses SAE 5W-20 or SAE 0W-20. The Malibu is fitted with an Engine Oil Life System that keeps track of engine performance to determine when an oil change is needed. When the "CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON" message appears, it's recommended to get the oil and filter changed within the next 600 miles. It's important to check the engine oil level monthly, or more frequently. If the level is below the minimum mark, add enough oil to bring it back up.
