A Ford Explorer utilizes Motorcraft Mercon LV automatic transmission fluid for its power steering system. To replace the power steering fluid, you should first locate the clear plastic container under the hood near the windshield. Using a pump, extract all the existing fluid from the container. As the fluid level drops, turn the steering wheel all the way to each side to allow the fluid in the system to drain back into the container. Empty this fluid as well. Once the container is empty, refill it to the indicated full line, being careful not to overfill. It may take some time for the steering wheel to loosen up, so it's recommended to drive for around 20 minutes to ensure the process was successful.

It all comes down to the specific year. My 2012 vehicle comes equipped with an electric power steering system known as EPAS. Unlike traditional hydraulic systems, EPAS utilizes an electric motor, eliminating the need for power steering fluid and the risk of leaks. Electric power steering systems like EPAS generally need minimal upkeep and are known to be more fuel-efficient.
