The Ford Ranger was equipped with one of five automatic transmission codes between 1983 and 2011. You can find the specific code on the safety compliance certification label located on the driver's side door post. For automatic transmissions, you'll see codes V, W, T, D, or R, with D and R being the ones used since 2000. The D code corresponds to the 5R44E transmission on 2.3L and 3.0L models, and the 5R55E transmission on 4.0L models, each with specific gear ratios. Meanwhile, the R code is for the 5R55W transmission found in 2002-2011 4.0L models, also with its own set of gear ratios.
