In 2016, the Ford Focus is designed to use DOT 3 brake fluid which is recommended for optimal performance. While many cars can also use DOT 4 fluid, it's best to follow the manufacturer's suggestion. If your brake fluid is running low, your car will typically alert you by illuminating the ABS light. This indicates the need to refill the fluid or inspect the brake system. Topping up the brake fluid can be done easily by yourself. You can find cans of brake fluid at local auto shops such as Autozone, as well as retailers like Target and Walmart.

I have a 2016 Ford Focus. I made the mistake of purchasing Dot 3 brake fluid without checking the cap, only to realize that it specifically requires the use of DOT 4 according to the lid. Learn from my oversight and be sure to check your cap before purchasing brake fluid.

Thanks, Russell, for the advice. I checked the top of the cap and found that mine also uses Dot4. I drive a 2016 Ford Focus SE with a 2.0 engine. My regular funnel didn't fit, but luckily I had a collapsible one that worked perfectly.
