For the 2006 Mazda MX-5, the specified power steering fluid is Dexron II. To replace the power steering fluid, begin by finding the reservoir located under the hood near the windshield; it is a clear plastic container. Use a pump to extract all the fluid from the reservoir. As the fluid level drops, turn the steering wheel fully in one direction and then fully in the other. This action will allow the fluid from the steering system to drain into the reservoir, which you should also remove. Once the reservoir is empty, refill it up to the specified full line without overfilling. The steering wheel might still feel stiff initially, so drive the car for around 20 minutes to ensure the new fluid circulates properly.

The power steering reservoir should still have a distinct yellow color even after all these years. The only way to tell if it's been changed is if it's clear.
