The solenoid valve for releasing fumes from the evaporative emission canister is situated above the back of the muffler. This canister contains about 2 pounds of charcoal that captures fuel emissions until they are released. If you detect a gasoline odor inside your car but there are no fuel leaks, the canister could be the culprit. Besides being unpleasant, breathing in these fumes is harmful, and the issue should be addressed promptly. If you happen to undergo an emissions evaluation during this situation, your vehicle will not pass the test.
