In a Ford Transit 2.4, the coolant temperature sensor is positioned on the right side of the engine, above the bell housing. It has a brass hue and a grey connector. This sensor, also referred to as the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT sensor or ECTS), gauges the temperature of the coolant in the cooling system, revealing the engine's heat output. A malfunctioning ECT sensor can provide incorrect data to the computer, leading to inaccurate fuel and timing calculations. It is common for the coolant temperature sensor to malfunction and transmit a consistently cold signal to the computer.

Check out eBay for a 2.4 diesel engine, where you can find the temperature switch located at the rear of the engine cylinder head above the flywheel. Take a look through the engine photos to get a good sense of the engine as a whole.
