The 2009 Chevy Cobalt is equipped with two oxygen sensors in the exhaust system. The first sensor, known as bank one, is situated at the base of the exhaust manifold just prior to the catalytic converter. The second sensor is positioned right after the catalytic converter. To remove them, you will only need a 22-millimeter open-end wrench or an oxygen sensor wrench. It is advisable to warm up the engine before attempting to remove the sensors as this can expand the metal in the exhaust, potentially easing the removal process. Start by disconnecting the electrical connection, then turn the sensor counterclockwise to unscrew and take it out. Replacing each sensor will typically cost between $30 and $35. If you opt to have a professional mechanic replace them, expect labor charges of up to $80 per hour.
