In a 2004 Ford F-150 truck, you can find two speed sensors on the driver's side of the transmission, spaced about 8 inches apart. One sensor, located closer to the front of the vehicle, is called the input shaft speed sensor. It keeps track of how fast the transmission's input shaft is moving. The other one is known as the output shaft speed sensor, which monitors the speed of the output shaft as it spins. Both sensors talk to the transmission control module, which decides when to shift gears. They also play a vital role in how the cruise control system works. If one of these sensors malfunctions, the transmission may struggle to shift smoothly, possibly causing damage to internal parts like the valve body, hydraulic lines, and even the gears themselves.
