In your 2002 Chevy Tracker, you can find the OBD II port beneath the driver's side of the dashboard, just below the steering column. To access the plug, you'll need to remove a small plastic cover. OBD II stands for On-board Diagnostics system Second generation, having replaced the first generation in 1996. The initial Gen 1 was developed in 1987. The primary purpose of these two systems is to establish a universal communication protocol for reading and exchanging data from the increasingly computerized vehicle systems and sensors. Before the introduction of OBD systems, vehicle owners and independent mechanics had to use different scan tools for each vehicle make they worked on. The implementation of this system became a legal requirement in the US in 1996 for vehicles to be sold.
