The speed sensor for a 2004 Chevy Silverado can be found on the right side towards the back of the transmission. This sensor, also known as the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), plays a crucial role in calculating the transmission's gear ratio to monitor the vehicle's speed and facilitate smooth shifting. Signs of a faulty VSS include rough or incorrect gear changes. If the sensors fail to provide accurate speed data, the powertrain control module (PCM) won't be able to effectively manage gear shifts. As a result, your cruise control might malfunction, and the check engine light could illuminate.
