If your brake light isn't working, it could be because of a blown fuse, damaged wiring, or a bulb that needs to be changed. For a Ford Focus Hatchback, the recommended bulb size is #3157. To replace it, open the hatch and locate the two wing nuts inside that hold the lamp in place on either side of the back of the car. One nut is below a plastic flap and the other is above it. Open the flap to loosen nut #1, then do the same for nut #2. Gently pull the assembly from the car's frame from the outside. Once you have access to the back of the assembly, look for the grey brake light plug and twist it counterclockwise to remove it. Replace the bulb with a new one and follow the reverse steps to close everything up.

It's possible that the turn signal or brake light may be functioning fine, but the taillight portion could be burned out. By changing the bulb on your Ford Focus, you can fix both issues and get them working again.

Turn off the lights and pop the trunk. Take out the plastic screws and use a socket wrench to remove two nuts holding the casing in place. Swap out the old bulb with a new one.
