For optimal performance, it is recommended to use A5W-30 synthetic oil in all 2002 Volkswagen Jetta engines as it maintains its quality well and does not degrade quickly, requiring an oil change every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. While a conventional 5W-40 oil is also suitable, it tends to deteriorate faster, necessitating an oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. The oil capacities vary based on engine size: the 1.8L inline-4 gas engine and 1.9L inline-4 diesel engine require 4.8 quarts, the 2.0L inline-4 engine needs 4.4 quarts, and the 2.8L V6 engine requires 6.1 quarts. To perform an oil change, you will need a 19mm end wrench, a jack and jack stands, a drain pan, and clean towels. Follow the instructions in the owner's manual to lift the car using the jack and secure it with the jack stands under the frame. Position the drain pan underneath the oil pan, locate the 19mm hex head drain plug at the rear of the oil pan, and remove it to drain all the oil. After draining the oil, replace the oil filter with a new one, reinstall the drain plug, and refill the engine with oil.

In the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta, the base 1.8L inline-4 engine and the 1.9L inline-4 diesel option both use 4.8 quarts of oil. If you opt for one of the 2.0L inline-4 engines (engine codes AVH V and AZG K), you'll need 4.4 quarts of oil. However, if your 2002 Jetta has one of the 2.8L V6 engine options (engine code AFP 5 or BDF 6), you'll need 6.1 quarts of oil. All of these engines require either 5W30 synthetic oil or 5W40 non-synthetic oil.
