The 2012 Subaru Outback requires 4.4 quarts of oil for the 2.5L non-turbo engine, 4.5 quarts for the turbo 2.5L engine, and 6.9 quarts for the 3.6L V6 engine. All these engine types use SAE 5W-30 oil, and Subaru recommends using synthetic oil whenever you need to do an oil change. There are two main types of oil: synthetic and conventional. Synthetic oil offers better protection and longer life compared to standard petroleum-based conventional oil. This means you can typically go 7,500 miles between oil changes, as opposed to 3,500 to 5,000 miles. It's important to check your oil at least once a month to ensure it's free from debris.
For the 2012 Subaru Outback, it is recommended to use 5W-30 oil. If you cannot find 5W-30 conventional oil, you can opt for 5W-30 synthetic oil to ensure top engine performance. Turbo models must use 5W-30 synthetic oil, although conventional oil is also acceptable. The oil capacity for the 2.5 L non-turbo models is 4.4 US quarts (4.2 liters), 4.5 US quarts (4.3 liters) for the 2.5 L turbo models, and 6.9 US quarts (6.5 liters) for the 3.6 L models.
