In a Chevy Sonic, if you see the code P0171, it means that the fuel system is operating too lean, indicating a lack of oxygen in the exhaust system as detected by the oxygen sensors. The car's computer (ECM) will adjust by adding more fuel to achieve the proper air-fuel mixture for optimal combustion. The code P0171 is then triggered to inform you of this adjustment. Typically, you won't experience any performance issues with P0171, and the first indication of a problem is usually the service engine soon light turning on. The usual culprits for this code include a vacuum leak, a faulty oxygen sensor, or a malfunctioning mass air flow sensor.

Initially, I scanned 7 codes for the oxygen sensor, cleared them all, rescanned, and found all 7 back again. I checked the ECM-3 fuse, which was number 24, and replaced the blown fuse. This fixed all the codes for the oxygen sensors, and the check engine light disappeared. I believe this repair only ended up costing $2 for the replacement fuse.
