The 2006 Toyota Sienna comes with a timing belt instead of a timing chain. The Sienna used timing belts from 1998 to 2006, then switched to a chain in 2007 and has stuck with it since then. One reason for the switch is that the chain requires less maintenance than the belt. Timing belts on vehicles need to be replaced regularly, typically every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Belts need to be changed because they are on the outside of the engine and exposed, unlike chains, which are inside and protected. Replacing the belt can cost between $460 and $580 for labor plus additional for parts.
