The 2014 Toyota Tacoma utilizes a timing chain in place of a timing belt. Previously, from 1995 to 2004, V6 engines in the Tacoma used a timing belt before transitioning to a timing chain in 2005, which has been the standard since. Opting for a chain is advantageous as it typically doesn't necessitate replacement like a belt would. When a vehicle has a timing belt, it should be replaced every 60,000 to 100,000 miles, whereas a timing chain generally only needs inspection around every 150,000 miles. Although chains are unlikely to fail, periodic inspections are still recommended just in case. Issues that may arise are often related to tension on the chain.
