The GMC Terrain will be outfitted with a timing chain as recommended by the manufacturer. While the timing chain is designed to last the vehicle's entire lifespan, issues can occur due to normal wear and tear or a faulty timing chain tensioner. In cases like these, the timing chain may stretch or warp, leading to rough running, hesitation, or even stalling of the vehicle. An initial slapping noise upon starting the engine can indicate a problem. If the timing chain tensioner is faulty, it may cause the chain to become loose and possibly detach. Both the v6 and i4 engines in all trim levels of the GMC Terrain utilize a timing chain.
