The INFINITI G7 utilizes a timing chain to synchronize the crankshaft with the camshaft. This timing chain is continuously lubricated by engine oil and is expected to last for the entire lifespan of the vehicle. Typically, the chain may require maintenance around 100,000 miles to replace the tensioners and guides. The timing chain is responsible for coordinating the crankshaft's position with the camshaft, which ultimately controls the opening and closing of the valves throughout the piston's stroke cycle. As the piston rises, the intake valve opens to allow the intake of air and fuel into the cylinder. The mixture is then compressed and ignited by the spark plug, resulting in the piston moving downward as the fuel burns. Subsequently, the exhaust valve opens to release the exhaust gases into the exhaust system. If the tensioners become too loose, the chain could skip a tooth, leading to a timing misalignment that could potentially result in the piston colliding with a valve and causing severe engine damage.
The INFINITI G37 is equipped with a timing chain rather than a timing belt.
