The 2005 Chevy Silverado does not come with a transponder chip in the key itself. If you have to get a new key, a regular steel key can be made to function for your truck. If your truck is equipped with the optional alarm system, you will receive a separate key fob that includes the transponder for locking and unlocking along with buttons. This key fob contains the chip and is pricier to replace if it goes missing or is damaged. If your fob isn't working properly to lock or unlock your truck, try replacing the battery as they can lose power over time.
I recently purchased a 2005 Chevy Silverado and got some metal keys made, but they don't seem to work.
