The LS460, similar to other Lexus models, is equipped with a timing chain rather than a timing belt. Lexus/Toyota opted for a chain over a belt due to its longer lifespan and lower likelihood of problems. Some timing chains have been known to outlast the vehicle itself. While some manufacturers recommend timing chain maintenance at 120K - 150K miles, many chains last well beyond that mileage. Chains are preferred over belts because belts can stretch, potentially causing performance and drivability issues. Despite the advantages of chains, some manufacturers still use belts due to lower production costs. As a result, most luxury vehicles utilize chains unless there are specific reasons to use a belt.

The timing chain is known for its durability and reliability, but it relies on various components to maintain the valve timing in sync, such as the tensioner, guides, pulley, bearings, and cam-chain. It's important to consider that certain Lexus models released after 2007 may have timing belts, but as far as I know, the LS460 series still uses a timing chain. One simple way to distinguish between the two is to look at the engine's side cover – a black plastic cover typically indicates a timing belt, while a cast aluminum cover usually signifies a timing chain.
