The Toyota Matrix utilizes a chain rather than a timing belt to manage the engine's timing. This chain links the crankshaft and the camshaft, ensuring that the piston's position aligns correctly with the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves. When the crankshaft rotates, the connecting rods move up and down, with the pistons situated at the top of the connecting rod. Their primary role is to compress the air-fuel mixture before the spark plug ignites, propelling the piston downward into the cylinder. The fuel is introduced into the cylinder once the intake valve opens, and after combustion, the exhaust valve permits the gas to exit the engine. A misaligned timing could result in the valves opening at incorrect times, causing the piston to collide with them and potentially damaging the engine.
