In the Volkswagen Tiguan lineup, the engines are equipped with timing chains for better reliability. Usually, timing chains are low-maintenance and provide benefits to owners. However, there was a major issue with the 2009 model year Tiguan. A faulty timing chain tensioner caused numerous vehicles to unexpectedly stall while on the road. This problem was so severe that a group of Tiguan owners united to file a class-action lawsuit against Volkswagen. While a settlement was reached, it did not adequately assist most affected individuals. The settlement only covered a portion of the repair costs, ranging from 25-45%, for incidents that occurred over 90,000 miles, which was common. Furthermore, vehicles surpassing 100,000 miles were not eligible for the extended warranty. Owners who missed the claims deadline were forced to pay out-of-pocket expenses, sometimes amounting to $3,000 for a timing chain replacement.
