The Volvo XC60 features a timing chain rather than a timing belt. While timing chains are designed to last the lifespan of the vehicle, they may stretch or wear out over time. Although less common than belt failures, a worn or noisy timing chain may signal the need for replacement if it affects the vehicle's timing. Replacing a timing chain typically costs between $80 and $130 for the part, with labor costs ranging from $600 to $760, making it a potentially expensive repair.

It all comes down to the type of engine! I just upgraded the timing belt on my 2016 XC60 with the 5-cylinder T5 engine, which had reached 100,000 miles. The dealer charged significantly more than the estimate provided earlier—more than $1500. This expense covered not only the timing belt replacement but also the water pump and several pulleys included in Volvo's service kit. Interestingly, all their current 4-cylinder engines come equipped with timing chains.
