Your 2002 Ford Explorer comes with one of two engine options based on your initial configuration when purchasing. You will either have a 4.0L V6 or a larger 4.6L V8 engine. The smaller engine needs 5.0 quarts of SAE 5W-30 full synthetic oil, although you can temporarily use SAE 5W-40 as a substitute. The bigger engine requires 6.0 quarts of SAE 5W-20, but you can use SAE 5W-30 as an alternative for a brief period. However, using these substitutes is not advised for extended periods. The issue lies in the oil viscosities. The alternative oils are thicker, so while they may be cheaper, they can create friction in the engine, leading to premature wear and tear. Ultimately, this friction could result in your engine failing earlier than it should.
