While there have been reports of a power transfer unit (PTU) leak in certain Ford Explorers from 2013 and 2014, Ford has not issued a recall for this issue. However, there is a technical service bulletin available under the code Ford TSB 13-9-16. The bulletin explains that the problem is commonly due to a missing or disconnected vent hose in the PTU. Though Ford typically covers 0.4 hours of labor under warranty for this fix, if your warranty has expired, it is still a relatively straightforward repair that can be done by someone with basic automotive knowledge. Simply procure a replacement vent hose, and you should be able to complete the repair in about an hour.
