The Ford Explorer's timing chain is designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle, but the camshaft tensioners can stretch over time, potentially affecting the engine timing. Some Explorer models are eligible for camshaft tensioner and intake manifold gasket replacements under recall "ProgRam 00M12," specifically the 1998 models. Signs of tensioner issues include engine rattling during cold start-ups, metal shavings in the oil, and misfires. To reduce chain wear, Explorer owners of any year should schedule regular oil changes with the correct engine oil viscosity. The tensioners operate inside the engine and need continuous lubrication to prevent problems.

Ford Explorers have been unreliable for over 14 years!! My Explorer began making noise at only 113,000 miles. None of the local auto shops are willing to deal with this issue and the dealerships have long waiting times. We had everything almost perfect with this SUV and now I'm being told it's worthless. The repair costs would be around $3,500 to $4,000. Ford ought to be embarrassed for offering such a subpar vehicle. They should initiate a recall for all affected models! This experience has turned me off from ever purchasing a Ford again!!
