To refill the transmission fluid in your 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt, make sure you have some Dexron transmission fluid on hand. Remember to replace the entire fluid every 50,000 to 60,000 miles, depending on your driving conditions. If you drive on dirty roads or in heavily polluted areas, such as big cities near the coast, the fluid may need changing sooner. Open the hood of your car and locate the small black plastic fill port. You can easily unscrew it with your fingers or use pliers if needed. Insert a funnel into the fill port and pour in enough fluid so the dipstick reading falls between the minimum and maximum markers.
A dipstick is not present on a 2005 Cobalt. Instead, you can find a black screw-on cap on the top of the transmission to the right of the engine for adding transmission fluid.
